The programme was founded in 1983 and is funded by the FCDO (Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office) of the British government and its Partners. It was first known as the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Awards Scheme at its founding in 1983 before the name was changed to Chevening in 1994.
A Chevening Secretariat was established in April 2012 by the Association of Commonwealth Universities who took over the running of the programme then. Two types of awards are offered by Chevening, and they are; Chevening Fellowships and Chevening Scholarships. The Chevening scholarship is for Masters’s programme only, it is not open to undergraduates or PhD.
Since its establishment in 1983, Chevening has given over 50,000 Scholarship Awards.
The Scholarship award is quite competitive as almost 100,000 applications are received from about 130 countries annually. The scholarship award is worth over £18,000, and it takes care of visa costs, tuition, living expenses, and travel cost.
Applications are open between early August and early November part of the year. Applications in 2021 closed on the 2nd of November 2021. British High Commissions and Embassies all over the world are the ones who select the recipient of Chevening Scholarships. Chevening Scholarship has no upper age limit.
